Protection
Molded case switches are intended for use as disconnect devices only. According to UL Standard 489, molded case switches must be protected by a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker (or fuse) of equivalent rating. These switches are labeled with their appropriate withstand ratings, defined as the maximum current, at rated voltage, that the switch will withstand without damage when protected by a circuit breaker (or fuse) with an equal continuous current rating.
Automatic molded case switches, similar in construction to thermal-magnetic circuit breakers, lack a thermal detection element. They open instantaneously at a non-adjustable, factory preset, magnetic trip point calibrated to protect the molded case construction. These switches are more compact than conventional disconnect switches and are compatible with electrical accessories for added flexibility.
